Pahrump Has Some Things Going For It

By Steve Bagasao

Most people who have heard of Pahrump probably have some idea about it that is not positive. In fact Pahrump is often portrayed on TV as a backwards place where most people live in trailers, prostitution is legal, and the sheriff is a tabacco spittin' redneck named Buford. OK, so most of that is true...except the sheriff's name isn't Buford.

Yes, Pahrump is a quirky little town, 60 miles northwest of Las Vegas. It doesn't have too much going for it in the way of jobs and commercial conveniences. Walmart is the biggest employer, and you can forget about finding a decent place to eat.

The town council is filled with a bunch of old, ham-radio-operating, conspiracy-theory-believing, geezers that think they have the solutions for all of the world's problems, but can't seem to solve any of Pahrump's.

And yes, prostitution IS legal...sheeesh. (we usually don't mention this in mixed company. With a name like Pahrump, what do you expect?)

The list could go on and on...but I digress. Aside from all of it's nefarious idiosyncrasies, Pahrump does have some things going for it that make one forget about all of the other stuff...great weather and natural beauty.

I was walking out to the mail box the other day, wearing shorts and a tee shirt, in the middle of February, and there I stood, on a warm and sunny day, surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. I thought, it does not get any better than this.

For many who have never been to Nevada, Las Vegas, gambling, and the strip are usually what first comes to mind. Most do not realize that Nevada is filled with an incredible amount of natural beauty. Aside from the rugged beauty of the desert, Nevada is a very mountainous state, and in the winter, most of the mountains are covered with snow, making for some breath-taking scenery.

But what I love the most, is the snow is usually on the mountains and not in the valley, where I live. It's great to be able to look at the snow, in my tee shirt, and not have to actually shovel it (I came from Wisconsin!).

So next time you think of Nevada, and Pahrump in particularly, think of me, on my patio, in the winter, gazing at the snow-capped mountains, while grilling up some steaks.

Pahrump's not so bad after all!
